Waffles the Trading Card Game: Second Edition! Everything You Need to Know About the Update

In 2021, Waffles was born. He’s a Leo, if you were wondering, which has to be good for a cat. In 2024, Rhi and Noodles would make a trading card game based on his antics. In 2026, we’re updating those original rules, for nothing is sacred. We’re excited to announce Waffles the Trading Card Game: Second Edition!

Why the update? In the two years since launching the first edition of the game, we’ve had some wonderful and helpful feedback! Second Edition seeks to improve the game for everyone based on everything we’ve heard from you!

This does, unfortunately, mean that we’re bringing Waffles the Trading Card as it currently exists to an end. Due to the new sizing and difference in rules wording, First Edition cards will be generally incompatible with Second Edition. You could probably make it work if you wanted to, but Second Edition isn’t built with this in mind. First Edition will forever remain the game it is, as it currently is.

It’s been an incredible experience to see a game born from my and Rhi’s desire to make some art together overshoot our expectations by orders of magnitude. Seriously, when we debuted at October MCM 2024, we took 10 of each deck and sold out by 11am on Saturday. Whoops! The love and support shown for this project has been far beyond anything we could have hoped for. Waffles the Trading Card Game: Second Edition is our way of updating the game to reflect player feedback and make a better game for everyone!

So what, you may be wondering, has changed? 

• The game’s rulebook has been rewritten to read more clearly, and a couple of rules have changed to streamline play. Second Edition is much easier to learn and arbitrate. Changes to how the Cute score is used make games snappier. 

• Cards are now standard TCG size, so they fit in your card sleeves! (They would also fit in card sleeves with Waffles on the back of them, if such things were to exist). They’re also being printed on thicker paper, making them nicer to hold if you don’t sleeve them [shudder]. 

• Cards themselves have seen some text changes to reflect the new rules. That’s right, Set 1 and the Waffles’ Fantasy Adventures expansion are returning in Second Edition, in their new form! 

• New sets are in the works! Our first Special Set, containing 21 all-new cards, will be dropping at May MCM, and we’re working on the next Main Set, with news to follow for both! We’re also working out the logistics of new product lines. Logistics here means “how much can Rhi, who is one person, make?” We’re staying handmade, sustainable, traditional print!

We’re very excited for this next chapter in our silly cat game, and we’re genuinely so grateful for the support that has allowed us to do this. Second Edition is a combination of efforts from everyone who has bought and talked to us about First Edition. Truly, Second Edition is an effort to give those who love our fluffy son the best game based on his foolish deeds as possible. 

This morning, he climbed up onto the tallest bookshelf in the house and couldn’t get down, but also didn’t want my help. He just yelled and tried to throw books all over the place. So there’s that. Waffles the Trading Card Game: Second Edition will be out soon. Thank you again.
